Vital Stats Update

We had Simon's 18-month appointment yesterday, and had something confirmed that we already suspected based on how his clothes are fitting. He's gotten a lot taller! Creeping up the growth charts, now at 40th percentile for length. He's still at the 20th percentile for weight, but eats well and is doing great overall.

He's also moving up at daycare, where they are transitioning him to the toddler room. He could have probably moved there earlier, but he's kind of at an in-between age and things overall at daycare worked out better for him to be in the infant room for a while. But a few weeks ago, they moved him to the toddler room just for nap time, since he's the only one from the infant room who takes only one nap in the early afternoon. He sleeps on a cot and does really well with it! This week they have started keeping him down there for the rest of the afternoon, and it sounds like it's going great. The toddler room teacher, Lauren, says that he does as well or better at listening than the other kids in the room. But he does have some trouble sitting in his chair and staying there. If any of you know the story of Troy's first day of kindergarten, it'll be obvious where Simon gets that from. :)

He's also starting to, um, assert himself more. (Read: he's started throwing tantrums when he doesn't get his way.) We're trying to deal with it mainly by ignoring them, with varying degrees of success. Mostly we're learning how to try to avoid the tantrums using weapons of mass distraction.

Sorry for the picture-less post - more soon!

More art work

Simon has also had fun playing with new tubby crayons!

So far he seems to be an ambidextrous colorer - we think he's a righty based on his use of a fork and spoon, but he doesn't seem to favor one side when coloring yet@

Our budding artist

Simon has enjoyed coloring with the new markers he got for Christmas. Here's one of his first masterpieces:

He was quite proud of himself!

Tubby fun

Simon loves playing with his new tubby toys from our friend Jessica. Since she informed us that there can "never be too many videos," we dedicate this one to her with thanks!

Random silliness

Simon really loved playing with his cousins Emily and William over New Year's weekend. (Technically they're his cousins once removed, but we're just going to call them his cousins, mkay?)

Here he is hamming it up for them at our New Year's Day brunch!

More pics from New Years

Over New Years weekend, it was really cold outside, so we were mostly confined to my parents' house. I took Simon out at one point, though, to Rosedale mall where we ran around the hallways and also played in the kids play area.

There was a big slide that had no stairs to go up. But Simon figured out how to get up really quickly by using his feet!

And of course, whenever he slides down a new slide, he goes down backwards on his tummy. Very cautious, our boy is.

There was also a fun bridge to climb on:

And rides to ride on. He was amused enough to sit in them without me paying the 75 cents to get them to rock back and forth, thankfully.

It was a great hour or so of playing. And we also got to meet up with our friend Jessica for a while at Rosedale, and it was great to see her!
