Surviving...
Well, we all seem to be surviving Mommy's first cold. I started feeling like I was coming down with something the day after Christmas, and knew it for sure on Sunday and Monday. I did go to work on Monday, but decided to stay home Tuesday and today after feeling really bad. (Probably overdid it.) I'm on the mend, but we decided to cancel the New Year's Eve get-together we'd planned to have at our place. It just didn't seem like the right time to have people over.
VERY thankfully, Simon doesn't seem to have come down with anything major. He was kind of "out of sorts" yesterday and napped more than usual, but certainly no cough or apparent sore throat like I've had. Troy has had some congestion but also nothing serious - which is weird, because it's usually the other way around! Normally I get just a hint of a cold, and he gets the full brunt of it. He is crediting his "government nanobots" for his apparent immunity. Apparently the ones I got in my H1N1 vaccine were not as potent, according to Troy. Ha.

And finally, Simon's hair has been getting long enough to do cute things with it when it's wet. This was my attempt at a mohawk. It'll be better when it gets a little bit longer!

A day late, but better late than never...
If only I'd opened up the bin of 6-month clothes earlier. Simon's still pretty comfortably in the 3-6 month sizes, but I pulled out the 6-month bin yesterday to get out a few more "fuzzy" pajamas, which he wears over his regular jammies to bed at night. And this is what I found:

Merry Christmas!
First of all, the "official" Christmas photo of Simon. :)
This evening we went to the early "family" service at Old South. There was singing and there were candles, and there were friends of ours who have a new 6-week-old baby boy, portraying the holy family in the informal "pageant." Baby Mason was a trooper and slept through the whole thing. Much fun!
Here are Simon and me during the passing of the light, while we were singing "Silent Night." Fear not - the angle of the photo makes it look like his hand is a LOT closer to the flame than it actually was.
Finally, Simon's stocking has been hung by the fake fireplace with care.
This stocking was my uncle Craig's, then my sister Elizabeth's, and now it is Simon's. We're happy to have so much family history here.

Simon's big day - out to lunch!
Troy has been taking his remaining vacation days for the year, so he's been home with Simon this past week. Yesterday, my boys came and picked me up at work, and we all went out to lunch!

Updated stats and other observations
Last week, I took Simon in to the pediatrician for his second Synagis shot. They had to check his weight to determine the proper dose. 15 lb. 1 oz! We are duly impressed. And our biceps are feeling the added weight.
A few other recent happenings:
1) He really, really likes grabbing his feet. And keeps getting better at it.
2) Giggling has become much more common. Last night he had quite the laugh-fest on the changing table!
3) He also really likes grabbing pretty much anything he can get his hands on. Including our ears, noses, mouths, etc. If physically possible, such as when it's a toy or something, he'll put whatever it is into his mouth. This has made reading books to him more difficult, as he'd rather grab the book and play with it than sit and watch us turn the pages.
4) I hesitate to put this in writing for fear that the streak will end... but... Simon has gotten very good at going to bed at night. The evening routine is now very well-established: a little solid food (tonight: peas!), then a bath, into pajamas, then final feeding of the day and into bed. He will go down while wide awake, watch his mobile for a little while (and maybe talk to it), then when he's ready he'll roll on to his tummy and go to sleep with out so much as a fuss. We're really happy with this development.
5) He is still waking up at night, though on many nights only once, around 4 a.m. We're hoping those nights continue to outnumber the others.
6) He really likes it when we sing to him. He has apparently not yet realized that we are terrible at it.
7) His latest sound - loud screeching.
8) He likes to try to fit as many fingers as possible in his mouth at once. Sometimes he'll get them so far back in his mouth that he almost gags. And then he'll look at you as if to say, "What the heck was that???"
9) He loves playtime in the Exersaucer, but prefers toys that are attached to it via plastic rings to those that are actually part of the Exersaucer. I think it's because they are easier to smash in order to make loud noises, and also easier to get in to his mouth.
10) Final new trick - blowing raspberries. Very cute to watch.

More play time
Simon has also really enjoyed this toy that we got from the Asch/Schnell clan. It's an inflatable toy that fills up with water in the middle, and it has little toys floating inside it. So when he is on his tummy, he can bat at and "chase" the toys and feel the water squishing around. He really likes it!

Feet!
Simon has started grabbing at his feet, especially on the changing table. It has made diaper time lots more interesting.
Note to Bostonians: As you'll see above, Simon has given the Minnesota Twins his allegiance. He doesn't know much else though, as he owns no Red Sox gear. :)

Christmas!
We've been slowly but surely getting ready for Christmas around here. Simon seems relatively unimpressed by the Christmas tree - I thought he might think the colored lights were pretty cool. But he's happy to pose in front of it!

Christmas Card Runners-Up

Oooh, so soft....
We've been seriously delinquent in posting some photos of Simon on his beautiful sheepskin rug from his Great-Uncle Craig and Great-Aunt Lynn. They gave it to us as a gift last Christmas! Now that he is good enough at holding himself up, he can have tummy time on it - before he used to end up with his face buried in it and it wasn't a good thing.
As you can see, he loves how nice and soft it is!

Boo. Kitty!
Simon has taken quite an interest in the cats lately. If they walk through a room, he'll watch them and follow them until they leave. He also likes "petting" them, if they allow him to get close. So far only Nasha has obliged, and doing so requires that either Troy or I be petting her also. Sangi remains wary as always and flees the scene if Simon gets too close. "Constant vigilance." (Two points to the first person to comment with the correct movie and literary references in this post!)

Rattlin'

Talking

First taste
Simon's pediatrician gave us the go-ahead to start giving Simon little bits of rice cereal if he seemed ready for it. He's been giving us some of those signs (interest in watching us eat, reaching for our food, etc.) so we gave it a try. This was his first "meal." Since then he's been getting better at getting more of it in his mouth and less of it on himself!

4 months
Simon turned 4 months old on Tuesday! We celebrated with his 4-month appointment with his pediatrician. Drumroll please...
He is now 13 lb. 10 oz. (25th percentile) and 25 inches (50th percentile). Dr. Yuan was pleased with everything... except the fact that he is nowhere near sleeping through the night. He's still getting up twice each night, in fact. It seems that we keep resolving one issue only to arrive at another... first we stopped swaddling and he slept better, then got worse. Then he started sleeping on his tummy and slept better, then got worse. I think more recently the issue has been hunger... he's started becoming very easily distracted when eating, and decides he's done when he's had just enough to no longer be really really hungry. We've helped the issue by going up a stage in his bottle nipples - the faster flow gets more food in him before he checks out. Another issue lately might be that he's not warm enough - the temps have gotten chillier out here. So we're going to try putting him in more layers when putting him to bed.
In any event, Simon was pronounced in great health, and was given his 4-month vaccines. He also got his first dose of Synagis, which is the antibody to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a cause of colds in adults but potentially terrible illness in babies. We're very grateful that our health insurance approved him to get it, even though he didn't meet the strict guidelines for it. (He doesn't have "chronic" lung problems, but he did have really awful issues at birth, and would have a really difficult time if he got sick.)
On a similar note, Troy and I got our H1N1 vaccines this week, which we are very happy about. (Well I am happy. Troy just keeps talking about how he's got "government nanobots" circulating in his system - he thinks flu shots are a conspiracy to inoculate us all with who-knows-what. He humored me and got this one anyway.) And our nanny is getting her shot on Monday. So the people spending the most time with Simon are all going to be protected, thankfully!

Blanket brigade
I finally got around to doing something I've been meaning to do for a while -- taking pictures of Simon on all of the beautiful blankets he received as gifts!
First up is one from Jeanne J., who used to work with my mom.
Second was made by our friend Jessica, whom both Troy and I went to grad school with. (Which you probably guessed upon looking at her beautiful creation - at some point I'll get a better photo of the full blanket with all its fun little details!)
I'm hoping to capture more in the coming weeks. It's getting harder though, as Simon won't lie still!

It's tummy time all the time...
Even when sleeping!
This past week, Simon figured out how to sleep on his tummy. And it seems he will sleep no other way. I've heard and read that once they are able to roll over, it's okay to let babies sleep on their tummies. And since he appears to like it so much, that's just what we're going to let him do!
